How does a hair transplant work?

The FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) hair transplant technique involves surgically picking permanent hair follicles from the donor area found at the back of the head and sides that are genetically programmed to grow for the rest of your life. This hair is then placed into the thin and balding area of the scalp.

An older technique is called the strip method (FUT) where a strip of hair is removed from the scalp and placed into the balding area. This leaves a linear scar in the donor area which is visible when the hair is trimmed short.

What is a graft?

Hairs on your head are naturally assembled into groups of two to six hairs. Using delicate instruments, these groups of hair follicles are taken in their entirety and grafted into the balding areas. 1000 grafts can represent about 2000 to 2500 hairs. We calculate our prices based on the number of grafts that Dr De Reys extracts, not on the number of hairs.
